Corrosion Removal

Corrosion Removal

Products

Bilt Hamber Laboratories produce innovative proprietary rust removers that are non-toxic, biodegradable and extremely effective. These rust removers overcome the considerable risk to the user of toxic mineral acids. Whilst mineral acids such as hydrochloric acid are effective at corrosion removal they also liberate corrosive gases which accelerate damage to any unprotected material around the area of treatment.

Blast cleaning is an effective method of corrosion removal but it's not without its drawbacks. Grit embedment can cause localised corrosion cells with associated coating failure. Copper and coal slags are widely used as abrasive media but can liberate dangerous levels of heavy metals into the atmosphere around the blast cleaning operation.

In the case of metallic objects corrosion may be defined as an electrochemical process which affects in most cases the aesthetics and longevity of an object. The mechanism is based on anode and cathode reactions in an electrolyte. Corrosion takes place at the anode with the release of hydrogen gas or the formation of hydroxyl ions at the cathode. These hydroxyl ions may react with metal ions dissolved at the anode and form metal hydroxides or hydrated oxides. If these are insoluble they will deposit as a passive layer on the metal surface and may reduce the rate of corrosion as in the case of stainless steels. The main technique available for reducing corrosion is to eliminate the electrolyte, either by:
- Drying out the environment; e.g. reducing the humidity to below 35% can virtually eliminate corrosion of mild steel.
- Providing a barrier between the metal and the electrolyte by passivating or providing a protective anti-corrosion coating.

As surfaces are exposed to environmental conditions deterioration will occur. In the case of paint films applied to automotive bodywork sunlight accelerates oxidisation, acid rain attacks paint binders and capillary pores are exposed by the use of surfactants used in vehicle cleaning detergents. Whilst the degeneration of a paint film under these conditions of attack will progress at a fairly slow rate it is desirable to maintain the quality of protection imparted to a valuable asset. Unfortunately vehicles are also bombard by stones from the roads upon which they travel, the resultant stone chip sites are exceptionally vulnerable to attack by corrosion and should be treated regularly. As asbestos has been replaced with metallic elements the rate of wear of the braking surfaces has increased, tiny metallic particles liberated in the air through which vehicles travel embed themselves in paint finishes. Felt as a gritty texture even on freshly washed vehicles these microscopic particles oxidise, expand and cause localised paint film damage, their removal should be routine to ensure optimum paint longevity. Auto-balm is a unique product providing protection and gloss to automotive paintwork and car bodywork.
It is the result of thousands of hours of development and testing - a blend of synthesised complex corrosion inhibiting molecules that lock together tightly enabling them to remain functional in ultra-thin, high gloss films. Auto-balm will seal capillary pores in paintwork and provide an anticorrosion barrier to stone-chips and other damaged sites on vehicle paintwork.
Auto-balm will also protect and shine chrome, aluminium, and alloys. Auto-balm is not an abrasive polish - if the vehicle's bodywork is faded or in poor condition then the use of a light cutting polish will be required before application.

“If your main criteria are sheen and paint protection, the ultra-durable wet-look shine Auto-balm achieves is unbeatable”

Bilt-Hamber Auto-wash is a new technology, highly powerful, environmentally friendly vehicle shampoo, formulated and manufactured to allow you to effortlessly, gently and effectively clean your paintwork before waxing with our highly acclaimed Auto-balm.

Auto-wash is anti-corrosive to bare steel too, ideal for owners of older vehicles which may have stone chips or exposed areas of mild steel. The highly concentrated formula means that less is needed to add to your water.
Not only do you save money, but the added benefit of this is simple - there is less matter to remove from your paintwork prior to polishing. Our Auto-wash will chamois off with ease to leave a perfectly clean body ready for further treatment.  In fact, as a single shampoo can be carried out with just a single teaspoon, one wash will cost you less than 11 pence.

Bilt-Hamber Auto-wash uses powerful surfactants to create a high foam level. This simply means that particulate matter is lifted away from the paint, where it can be safely removed with reduced risk of scratching or damage to your car’s paintwork; essential we think, for older vehicles and bikes with delicate paint.
